Yesterday one of our leaders shot off a little joke to me related to some of the vision stuff we’ve been hashing over in our leadership meetings.

Two blind pilots, both wearing dark glasses, come down the aisle of a jet that has already boarded the passengers. One is using a guide dog and the other is tapping his way down the isle with a white cane. Nervous laughter spreads through the cabin. Obviously this is a prank. But the pilots enter the cockpit, close the door and the engines start up. The passengers begin glancing nervously around, searching for some sign that this is just a little practical joke. None is forthcoming.

The plane moves faster and faster down the runway and the people sitting in the window seats realize they’re headed straight for the water at the edge of the airport. As it begins to look as though the plane is about to plow into the water, panicked screams fill the cabin. At that moment, the plane lifts off smoothly into the air. The passengers relax and laugh a little sheepishly realizing they’ve been duped and soon retreat into their magazines, secure in the knowledge that the plane is in competent hands.

In the cockpit, the blind Captain turns to the blind co-pilot and says, “Ya know, Bob, one of these days, they’re gonna scream too late and we’re all gonna die.”

Gives a whole new meaning to the idea of “back seat drivers” doesn’t it? Got me thinking about who follows who and why leaders need vision. My morning after reflections on Super Tuesday is that so many “leaders” say what it takes to get votes – they take their cues from their constituency. Of course that’s how a democracy works. But its seems fatal to me in the context of advancing the Kingdom of God. For sure, all leaders need to be in touch with those following them but Kingdom people need to be led by someone who hears from God. Jesus called the religious leaders of his day “blind guides.”

This week let’s ask God for increased clarity and greater vision, for the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night. God, release dreams and visions.
