If you’ve not yet read my earlier post on Todd Bentley, the Florida Healing Outpouring and the Seat of Scoffers, please read that first. This post is a follow-up to that earlier post and the stream of comments it provoked.
Since I wrote that post, I have spent three days and nights in Lakeland at the outpouring. A couple of those days I was with my friend Randy Bohlender. I concur with his assessments and refer you to his blog for those. Basically Randy notes there are a ton of hungry people there – and some strange folks as well (who can control who comes to a public meeting?). Randy notes… this is mostly God and there’s more going on than you see on TV.
My focus in blogging on this twice now has been to counter some of trash talk out there from the supposedly “Christian” self-appointed, anonymous, unaccountable, unfruitful, on-line revival police – these unloving people are sowing a fear of deception in the Body of Christ robbing many people of an innocent faith in a God who only gives good gifts to his children. They hinder children wanting to come to Jesus. These people only have faith for a counterfeit to show up on the scene. I’m now deleting most of the comments from those sitting in the seat of scoffers because they are missing the point of my posts. I’m not dialoging here about the rightness or wrongness of tattoos or any of the other things people are finding wrong about this revival. Most of what is coming in is mass “pasting” of links and selected Scriptures shot as arrows from places of concealment (Ps. 64).
I have my own growing list of relevant Scriptures. Read these carefully and you’ll begin to see my point. After that, I will share some very important things I heard said in Lakeland by the leaders there.
Romans 14:1,4,12,14 “…do not pass judgment on disputable matters… who are you to judge someone else’s servant? …each of us will give an account of himself to God… let us stop passing judgment on one another…”
Ephesians 4:29-30 “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”
In one of the comments in my previous post, a fellow took after me calling me “gay” and “limp-wristed” for not speaking against this… he then swore. He did send a follow-up comment the next morning to apologize. I forgive him, but this is my point… unwholesome talk is coming out of the mouths of people right now – the Spirit is being grieved – praise and cursing don’t come from the same mouth. These folks need to repent, and not to me, it’s not my revival. Jesus nailed these folks to the wall…
Matthew 12:34-37… You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”
Here it is again from the Message… “You have minds like a snake pit! How do you suppose what you say is worth anything when you are so foul-minded? It’s your heart, not the dictionary, that gives meaning to your words. A good person produces good deeds and words season after season. An evil person is a blight on the orchard. Let me tell you something: Every one of these careless words is going to come back to haunt you. There will be a time of Reckoning. Words are powerful; take them seriously. Words can be your salvation. Words can also be your damnation.”
Regarding the reaction of some to what is happening at the revival – 2 Corinthians 2:14… “The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.”
Regarding Todd Bentley – 1 Corinthians 1:27… “But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise”
Proverbs 12:18… “Reckless words pierce like a sword, the tongue of the wise brings health.”
And my personal favorite – Philippians 4:8-9… “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
Why don’t people focus on the good stuff going on here? Jesus is the focus of these meetings – that is indisputable. God’s Word is sung for hours, preached, there are powerful altar calls where people are getting saved. I was a part of a training where 600 people were trained in the basics of street evangelism and sent out in the community of Lakeland to witness and pray for people. The stories and testimonies coming back were awesome. 120 people were saved in the three days I was there through the work of these street evangelists. Nearly all of those going out into the streets have never done that before and were nervous-as-can-be. We should be praying for them. These hyper-critical scoffers on-line ought to log off indefinitely and go out in their communities to win the lost. But here’s the deal there… they have no life to offer the dying. They are so caught up in the “ministry” of killing what God is doing.
Why not focus on this… this is a picture of a seven year old boy who was severely cross-eyed five minutes previous. Now his eyes are normal and his mom and family members were absolutely beside themselves. The boy talked about Jesus touching him and how he loves Jesus. It made 8000 people cry. The scoffers have what to say about this?? They are blind to what God is doing here.
This revival started in Ignited Church which is pastored by Stephen Strader. Strader spoke in a morning session about what it was like to pastor something like this and how hard it was to be on the brunt end of merciless criticism from people supposedly in our camp. He said when this started April 2, God spoke to him to “not steady the ark.” People were calling saying “correct this” and “rein this in” but Strader says “we sensed we were not to steady the ark.” He’s referring to the time the oxen stumbled while bringing the ark of the covenant into the city of Jerusalem (2 Samuel 6). Uzzah reach out to steady the ark and God struck him down for his irreverent act. David took six steps and sacrificed a bull and fattened calf.
DON’T “STEADY THE ARK”
Pastor Strader and Todd Bentley are stewarding the presence of God here trying to usher it into cities around the world by imparting what God has given them to those who come wanting it where they live. And they sense they aren’t to “steady the ark.” Instead, Strader and Bentley are following David’s example in taking six steps and then sacrificing. Six is the number of man and Strader says they are interpreting this as representing the hand of man and how they are to do all they know to do, and then pray. For six days they are doing what the leaders collective experiences and counsel and wisdom say but then they are stopping on the seventh day and offering themselves up.
Strader preached a message on May 4 explaining why they sense they are to let the wheat grow with the tares. The message is called “The Wheat and the Tares” and includes this illustration:
(My paraphrase) Down the street is one of my favorite places to eat – it has a great buffet. But on that buffet are beets and I hate beets. But I don’t walk in the restaurant and make a scene and scream out to the manager – “This restaurant has beets on the buffet, get rid of them!” I’m not out spreading a bad report in the city saying “this restaurant has beets and the manager won’t get rid of them. This whole restaurant is bad and will kill you and everyone eating there is being poisoned!
Pastor Strader’s point is just come to the buffet and eat – stay away from the beets if you don’t like them. There are a lot of other things being offered here. Let’s focus on all the good things!

Hi Steve
I was blown away to read what you had written today as I had just published a long post, admittedly on second hand reports, as I haven’t been to Lakeland, on the things that marked this out as a move of God for me.
The main criticism I have heard over here is “what difference is all this making”. Isn’t it kind of indulgent” etc. I SO have to bite my tongue!!
I kinda believe prayer is a powerful offensive weapon (!) and my friends who flew in prayed with and for every non Christian they met on their travels to and from Fl. They had words of knowledge for a waiter. They prayed with people who served them in hotels/restaurants. Isn’t the thought of thousands of people doing that “ALONE” going to impact a community?
That hasn’t stopped now that they are home in the UK. They are on fire, motivated in their prayers, full of faith for the impossible, passionate for God and broken for the sakes of those who don’t know Jesus.
Their hearts are turned toward God for the nation of Scotland and for the kingdom to come in power.
I think that’s worth far more than words of discouragement and doubt. The fruit in these folks lives in the two weeks since they have returned is evidence for me, as well as all of the “aired on God TV” type stuff.

Lynn – Blessings to you in Scotland… may the winds of revival blow ever stronger there! I love how you speak of that which is “worth far more than words of discouragement and doubt!” Words are seeds and they grow into things either good or bad. Wouldn’t it be something if the scoffers, rather than sowing discouragement and doubt (which so obviously doesn’t flow from the heart of God) if they were to acknowledge it’s a good thing to see thousands in a city so hungry for God and then decided to pray that God would bless these gatherings and pray the Adversary and the Accuser of the Brethren would be bound. Steve, Awesome and honest post! Did Randy (The pastor @ the Burning-man festival in the Nevada desert) say there were strange folks in Lakeland? Come to think of it maybe a few. If I learned anything down there, it’s you can’t judge a book by it’s cover. If God can use Bentley, is He hunting for normal folks to usher in the Kingdom? I wonder what John the baptizer looked like, or how about Elijah?
Lynn- I experience the same kind of boldness coming out of the Revival as your friends did. We prayed for our waitresses, people at the hotel and 3 people at the airport before our flight left. This boldness was different than anything I have ever experienced, it was totally inspired by the love of Jesus Christ and totally absent of fear and rejection. It wasn’t the “I’m saved and your going to hell” evangelical message I have so often preached. I actually had compassion flowing from me for others and feared nothing and no one. I remember walking on the plane thinking ” If this would crash, I really wouldn’t care”. I had no fear of death!
1 John 4:17-18 speaks wonderfully into this perfect love, boldness and absence of fear. Perfect love really does cast out fear – Thank you Jesus!

Thanks for sharing your experience and heart with us! We missed a week of GodTV (because of being in South Dakota) and was excited to see that God is still powerfully moving when we returned home! We are hoping to go visit in June to become even more consumed with His fiery love.
My prayer is that the bride of Christ will receive her Bridegroom, that the eyes of our hearts will be enlightened to see our Beautiful One and the things of earth will grow stangely dim in the Light of His Glory and Grace!!

It is the potential for division that makes my heart so sad.
Better to say nothing that to say something unkind. I can hardly believe some of what I have read, with such nasty, cruel personally vindictive words.

My wife and I attended with a couple of pastor friends and we were all touched by the meetings. I don’t have a problem with God doing what he wants to do with whoever he wants to do it. Many claim a lot of these things aren’t biblical, but that’s ‘cut and paste” Christianity. The bible is a supernatural book, ‘alive’ so I don’t see how people can dare use it as a defense against the supernatural.
Todd Bentley gives it away in his own unique style. I saw him in Phoenix last year and talked to a retired, distinquised retired aerospace engineer, who said that they had Todd at their church, so even the older generation can recognize his anointing.
After getting a hands on blessing at the morning services last Thursday, and the Friday night at the convention center, I want to lay hands on anyone who wants a touch. I believe in the transferable anointing. Let God be God!

Issue: David with the ark being moved by the oxen. This was in direct contradiction of how the ark was to be moved. Never by any other than holy priests.
Had David been within the guidelines of the direction of God for His Glory, Uzzah would not have needed to die.
This has little to do with Lakewood, but I find the analogy with the story unfitting. As far as what is happening in Lakewood, I know nothing first-hand. I do find it interesting that it is causing such polarization within the body.
We do need to stop working to convince each other of what we believe to be right and allow God to make it real for us alone.

Jack, the verses in Romans are really helpful and I appreciate your comments on the Uzzah Scripture.
By my estimation, there are ten negative posts on this revival for every positive one. Those who are delighted to see it unfold aren’t wasting moments talking about it online. However, those against it are aggressively using the web as a place to so discord and doubt. So, I’ve been praying God will some lead people he wants to touch with this move of God to my posts instead of these others. If he does so for one person and they end up touched by God my purpose has been served.
When is revival not polarizing? The Kingdom of God is polarizing.

It’s true, alot of us could be looking at this thing through partly blind, but just make sure that you are not also. I can understand how this can be seen as a revival, but when I watch videos from the meetings I see nothing that has to do with Salvation or Repentance. All I see is Todd Bentley screaming about how God told him to kick a woman in the face while she was was praying, so she could receive the anointing. T
here are four wonderful guidelines that I go by when discerning whether something is of God… Did Jesus preach it? Did Jesus practice it? Did the Apostles preach it, or did they practice it? I can not see Jesus kicking someone in the face, or choking someone, or drop kicking someone so they can receive the anointing of the Holy Spirit. It’s given by God as a gift given in Love.
Matthew 7:22-23 says ” Many will say on that day Lord, Lord, did we not prophecy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and preform many miracles? Then I will tell him plainly ‘I never knew you, Away from me you evil doers'”.
Hebrews 13:8 says “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.”
Why would he do something so drastically different now, then what he has done in the past? I know that God does not need to kick someone in the face to anoint them. He could speak a single word and they would fall on their faces, why would he have to kick them first? He doesn’t need to drop kick them to get them on the ground. His Holy presence is enough to break the mountains.
Please check out this site, and ask yourself… Can you honestly say that Christ would do this, or Peter or Paul, or even John the Baptist?

Thanks for commenting. A couple things… there is much evangelism underway in Lakeland – it may not be evident from the TV but extended altar calls with clear gospel presentations happened each night I was there. People were called to repentance and faith in Jesus. In the AM hundreds are trained for street evangelism and sent out into the streets for the day. Also, people who are coming are leaving sharing the faith with great boldness in restaurants and airports and continue to do so after they get home. The evangelism of this revival stood out to me MORE than did the emphasis on healing.
On the fact that Bentley “kicks people in the face.” There are perhaps six things about him and this revival that I’d quickly change if I were in a position to do so. You have identified one. I have seen and heard Bentley do as you say but it’s not to anoint people or get God to touch them. Bentley talks about God asking him to do these things to test his obedience and willingness to do whatever God is asking him to do. God has led me to do some things way out of my zone of comfort so I can appreciate that. But, I’ve never heard God say anything such as kick or knee somebody. The lady Bentley felt God tell him to kick in the face actually didn’t get kicked in the face. Just as his foot went up she fell back under the power of God. It was a bit of an Isaac/Abraham moment – “sacrifice the child, no wait, I just wanted to see if you really would.” How willing are we to do what God asks? That I think is Bentley’s point. But again, I stress, I’m not-a-fan-at-all of talking about kicking people in the face. If nothing else, talk about this in small closed settings not on international TV where these things are greatly misunderstood and misinterpreted.
Final thought on God asking his people to do crazy stuff… Jesus “spit” in someone’s eyes one time didn’t he? Elisha laid on a dead boy once. Ezekiel spoke of seeing bizzare stuff.
The passage you quote – Lord, Lord didn’t we do many miracles… – two nights ago at the revival it was all about intimacy with Jesus – daddy stuff, Kiss the Son, etc. This passage – Lord, Lord is important. Repeating a name is a semitic expression of intimacy. JEsus is saying there are people out there “doing his work” who have no intimate relationship with him. He will say away from me I never knew you.
Again, Bentley speaks of intimacy with Jesus. HOWEVER, I’m been trying to make the point that the revival police who I’ve met are quite different. They love a good fight about JEsus more than they love Jesus.

I just went to lunch and was thinking some more about the concern you raised about Bentley’s violent methods and I thought to myself – duh! – why didn’t I tell my testimony?? I was healed via a violent method in 2000.
In 2000, I was having two debilitating migraines a week – these would shut all life for me down and a doc in our church was giving me samples of Zomig ($10 a pill) and these high powered meds barely even touched the pain.
In 2000, we held a prayer conference in our church in conjuction with some PRAY TEXAS folks and they had a worship leader named Rueban leading worship. After worship, Rueban came to me as I was sitting in the back of the church. He could tell something wasn’t right and I told him a migraine was coming on. He asked if he could pray for me and I said yes. He gathered a few others over to me – he prayed… I remember weeping (I almost never break down like that but something was different here). Then he forcefully hit my forehead with the heel of his hand and said “spirit of infirmity be gone in Jesus’ name!”
You have to understand, when I would get a migraine, my hair would even hurt – touching me would have been bad, let alone hitting me in the head. My wife gasped because she was so shocked. BUT MY MIGRAINE WENT AWAY IN THAT MOMENT AND HAS NEVER RETURNED!!!!
I PRAISE GOD FOR USING RUEBAN TO HEAL ME AND THE SHOCK AND PAIN (I FELT NONE REALLY) OF HIM HITTING ME WAS NOTHING COMPARED TO THE PAIN I WAS LIVING WITH.
I will say, I do not recommend nor do I allow people in our church to hit people we pray for, but again I was completely healed. A couple months later the doc who was feeding me samples of Zomig asked why I hadn’t come asking for more… I told him “I didn’t want to jinx it but I think I was healed.” Shortly thereafter I sensed God say “if you don’t give me glory for this, you can have your migraines back.” Today, I publicly tell of my healing as often as I can. Shortly thereafter we had a healing outpouring in our church and 60 people were healed. I pray that we are now entering another great healing outpouring here in our city.
Last thought… the Florida Outpouring is not half as extreme as what I have seen went I went to Nigeria in 2005 to soak in the revival there. WHen I listen to America Christians struggle with what is happening in Lakeland I sometimes think we are so sheltered and soft and have no grasp on what is happening in the dark corners of the earth as the kingdom of God drives out darkness.
And, back to Bentley’s methods, evangelicals for the most part are vastly unaware of the variety of deliverance methods/practices that are out there in the church globally. I’ve seen strong authoritative ministers run demons down and shout at people who are possessed. This also, in part, explains what Bentley is up to.
Even so, your concern is very valid and I’m sure that many are rejecting Lakeland because of these practices. That’s why I list Bentley’s occasional violent methods/talk as something I wish were quite different.

I think it’s time for you to say, “Jesus I want to know you tonight.”
I want you to close your eyes and pray this prayer.
Do you want to give your life to Jesus?
Do you want to give your life to Jesus?
I want you to pray with me right now.
The only way that you can be saved is that you must believe that Jesus Christ died and rose again. You must believe and confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord.
The only way you can really be saved is that you must make a conscious decision: Tonight I’m going to repent of my sin and I’m going to ask God to help me change my life.
You’re saying, I want to be a new creation.
Is that the commitment you’re going to make tonight?
Because you must be born again to see the kingdom of God.
Do you want to see the kingdom of heaven? The only way you can know that there is eternity for you is that you’re born again and that can only happen when you come to faith and you realize that you need a Savior and you make that decision. Not my prayer, your prayer.
But if you’ll pray from the bottom of your heart and believe tonight, and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, the Bible says you shall be saved.

Steve – Thanks for your powerful testimony of being whacked in the forehead and receiving your healing. Jesus has a million different ways to touch and heal people and we have mindsets from our own “religious” upbringing as to what is normal. What was normal in my experience was a dead, dry church. I never saw anyone healed. I’m not sure I ever saw a conversion. I saw people join the church and allot of religious activity.
2 Tim 3:5 Talks about people in the perilous last days “…having a from of godliness but denying its power”. The church is a sleeping giant. Just as God sent John the baptist to wake up the church and speak boldly without fear before Jesus came into His ministry, so God sends us the likes of Todd Bentley today. 1 Cor. 1:27 “But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise,…” While at Lakeland I saw NO teaching or ministry to contradict the written Word of God, just healings, deliverances and salvations. This revival isn’t perfect but it could wake up a sleeping giant.

“Violent” healing and deliverance techniques are nothing new. Smith Wigglesworth used to punch people for healing and deliverance. When asked why he hit people he said he was not hitting people, he was merely hitting a demon and the people got in the way…

So great to finally a find a postive place to go to hear and discuss the good God is doing in Lakeland as well as defend and discuss the issues the heresy hunters keep bringing up. People are getting saved, people are getting healed, people are getting delivered and fired up for God. I don’t quite think Satan is behind all of that!
